ACSM is reputable, as are ACE and AAFA. -EK

i'm personally certified through ACSM and i'll tell you right now it is no easy task. the test is quite comprehensive so make sure you study hard!

PM me if you have any specific questions about the process or whatnot...

Totally agree, im doing my master trainer certificite now with AIPT along with certificate 3 & 4 in fitness, like donnnnay said its not a walk in the park even if you have the experience & knowledge, you need to study up alot on anatomy of the human body, goodluck bro

If you love it & know its for you you'll do fine.

I know how you feel bro, I really feel that you have to look the part to be a trainer, I personally wouldnt take advice from someone that doesen't & the funny thing is you see trainers all the time that are out of shape themselves.

yeah but when you think about it you dont have to be in shape to know the proper form and correct way to exercise. but it is hard to take it seriously like this guy is more than over weight.

I'm working on that looking the part thing over the summer i did but i cut from 175 to 145 for wrestling and don't look big anymore. But in my two weeks of lifting after the season i've seen some good gains so i should be there soon.

I believe you also need a 4 year degree to sit for the ACSM CPT exam or is that the CSCS? Donnnnnay?

You can normally tell whether a trainer knows what he is talking about within the first five minutes of the first meeting. Its not a necessity to be "in shape" as long as the trainer isnt out of condition himself. I know a competitive bodybuilder who is a personal trainer and he gets less work than his mate who is thin, some people think that training will make them like a body builder and dont like that size....

You can be a personal trainer without any certification as long as you're smart, credible, confident, knowledgeable and has social connections. Having a thick face would help too.

You can start a personal training business and having your own training facility for your clients is absolutely an advantage.

Sure, theres nothing that states you must be certified.... but 90% of the time (around here at least) you wont get a job because people want that "certified" part in front of your name! And as Doug stated, I've noticed alot of women are scared of training with a "big" guy/girl simply because they dont want to look like that and are afraid if they train with them they will look like them. A general well fit, tone chap will do well.... and it doesnt hurt to have good looks...lol

There are "In-house' personal trainers in most gyms. They are employed as fitness trainers and they do sideline jobs as personal trainers in the same gym where they work.

Here in Manila, the gym instructors pathetically earn a measly minimum wage but they triple their basic earnings via personal training. I know of a Filipino champion bodybuilder who is 53 years old but he is still active in competing and at his age, he is bigger, leaner and more ripped than most guys half his age.

In his last contest, he won the overall and this was against bodybuilders young enough to be his kids. Because of his credentials as a successful muscleman and competitive bodybuilder, he is the most in-demand, adored and well-loved personal trainer in Gold's Gym Manila.

To me, the most fulfilling thing to hope for as a personal trianer is to have your own facility and promote yourself and business independently. It is tough work but it's very satisfying.
