    Default Women and Weight Training.

    Q. Is it true that lifting weights causes women to bulk up?

    A. While on a weight lifting program, the right hormones (testosterone) are necessary in order to bulk up. Women’s testosterone levels are much lower than men’s, so in most cases, they are not capable of building large muscles. In fact, since muscle takes up less room than fat, women tend to lose inches when they strength train. So in addition to the physical benefits (increased metabolism, decreased risk of osteoporosis, increased strength), strength training will help you slim down too! Women, in fact, are more likely to tone up from strength training rather than bulk up. Research shows that women can add up to 30% lean muscle and end up looking thinner, feeling stronger and being firmer.

Our society and pop culture seem to associate weight training with oversized muscles, but that’s just one avenue, which is extremely difficult for most people (including men) to achieve.

Women with an intense fear of becoming large (likely due to these images and myths) as a result of weight training are at a disadvantage when it comes to their health. The problem most women run into isn’t building too much muscle, but not building enough. This sets them up for increased risk of osteoporosis later in life, as well as a reduction in muscle mass of about 2-5% per year, which has an adverse affect on metabolism (and can result in weight gain).

    Right on.

Wonder how females get the impression that they will get bulked up like Arnold Schwarzeneggar by doing some weights.
    LOL

I have been doing that for quite long now, and am nowhere near Arnold.

You'd have to take testosterone supplements to build the way female bodybuilders do.

I don't know what all the fuss is about, I want to see muscle. I don't want to be big like Arnold and I know I can't be, but I really think a woman who is toned and has plenty of muscle looks great. I don't want to train like a girl! I am looking for a routine that is going to get me muscle and get me toned.

Yes you did Doug, thanks. I did the first workout today, shoulders & biceps and triceps. I liked it, but I had to change a few things. I can't do one arm cable curls because my left wrist is sore, but I did do cable curls with both arms. Same with one arm pushdown. Tommorrow I will do cardio.

The female body produces testosterone, although not in the same amounts as the male body. Doctors do prescribe females with low sex drive testosterone supplements, and in some cases for osteoporosis.

A natural testosterone supplement has been shown in some studies to increase appetite in some females

It will help with building muscle...

How big do you want to get? I trained a female who competed under 52Kg, but never took any supplements and yet came 4th in the British Championships, with only good training and good diet, She packed it in to have a family, but if she had of continued she would of been British champion, probably more....So it can be done...

You have to decide which you want first, although weights will build muscle you will also get some increase in strenght, but for pure strength the training is less reps, more rest between sets, and heavier weights..
