    Default Can you overdo BCAA's?

Just asking because I have my xtend (apple is great) that I mix and drink through the day. Then I have my dynatized whey, which also has them in it. Usually this is for my after workout, but I was considering doing a protein shake as one of my mid day meals. Usually I would do a protein bar, but figure a glass of whey in skim milk might be a little better.

Today's tip comes from David Barr:

    Slam the BCAA's

Pound back the BCAA's. Unlike antioxidants, and most supplements for that matter, it seems that "more is better" when it comes to BCAA's. There are sure to be diminishing returns, in that 100g won't be twice as effective as half the dose, but if you're using quantities like that, then you have too much money anyway. About 0.2g/kilo bodyweight is a good place to start, and work up from there.

Quoted from T-Nation. You're fine with the amount you're taking. Just make sure if you're eating a lot of protein to drink plenty of water.

You might want to keep in mind there is a lot of evidence that constantly keeping high levels of amino acids in your blood actually causes a decrease in protein synthesis. Sipping on BCAAs all day might actually have diminishing returns.

Google around for "amino acid refractory" if youd like some interesting reading. You get some good information on sipping throughout the day vs drinking them at specific times.

I would not Drink through the day
    I would do this

    1) Dose 4 scoops during your workout which is our recommendation

IF you want to dose more here are the optimal times:
    1) Fasted Cardio seperate from your training session
    2) Between Meals as Layne Demonstrates in his muscle protein synthesis study

Thats what makes aspects of working out so confusing. The differing opinions on so many aspects. This seems to be one. Some say they sip all day. Some say only during workouts, and finish up after, some say a couple times a day. Ive even seen someone say sip all day, then more during the workout. Its hard to know which is right for you, and can get expensive experimenting.

There is no harm done to the body if you take more BCAA than is neccassary, the excess will be osmoregulated out of your body, but yes there is evidence that a sustained high level of amino acid may decrease the rate of protein synthesis.

I agree, this is a huge problem.
A good place to start would be the objective evidence. From there, if you're interested, play with anecdotal claims.

To be honest, instead of fretting over something so minute, you could focus on the bigger picture, your diet, and focus on getting that down perfectly. A supplement will always be there to supplement your diet.

    ^^

best way to go. the first thing I ask myself before buying a supplement is "what does clinical research say?".

after that question I ask myself, "Whats within my means and diet?".

as far as BCAA go, I drink them intra workout, and I drink them during class (right in-between 2 meals).

I dont doubt that drinking them first thing in the AM, and right before bed would be good to, but thats outside what im willing to spend :P

Ok. Ill just save the xtend for my intra workout drink. Thats how I did it yesterday. I do a shake as one of my meals, then another one after my workout/pre-dinner, and like I said, the water/bcaa's during the workout.

Google around for "amino acid refractory" if youd like some interesting reading. You get some good information on sipping throughout the day vs drinking them at specific times.
