Default How much can you bench press?

I am currently only able to do 50lb but my goal is to increase to 100lb eventually and maybe higher.

Just wondering what is typical for other ladies.

Well, GApeach can do 115. Most girls that I have brought to the weight room with me can only do the bar for a few reps. The strongest girl I brought was able to do 150 and she was a long time gymnastics girl, very athletic build.

    Default remember progress

I've been weight lifting at home for about two years and this year started a journal just to track my progression. So my last work out did a bench warm up with 40lbs 6 reps. Then did 60 lbs six reps three sets.
I use dumbbells so using two 30lb to get 60.
I always wonder how I compare to other females too!
Good goal setting to get to 100lbs. It may take me a while but that's okay.

The girl I'm seeing right now can't even do the bar at the incredibly masculine weight of one hundred five pounds. I think that a lack of drive causes most girls to psych themselves out when it comes to lifting a weight.

My girl got 9 reps at 65 pounds x3 sets last night. If she keeps progressing the way she is, she'll hit 105 by August. Soccer player, so strength isnt her main focus, but she's doing well.

I'm currently at 88 lbs but I've only bench pressed twice, before that it was off the floor and less weight due to the equipment I had; I'm expecting it to increase but I'm not stuck on the numbers since they don't matter to me...it's nice to see increases but that's all. I enjoy lifting and any increase in numbers is always great to see.

Bearing in mind that the average female weight tends to be around 110 lbs to 125 lbs, or that's what most would like; the 105 lbs is very close to 1 x bodyweight and for someone that has never lifted before they can't really be expected to just bench that weight.

Sometimes, it seems men don't understand that it may seem like a low weight to a man but it isn't that lightweight to a female who is generally weaker than a man anyway. For people like GaPeach and others that have been lifting for some time then, yes, maybe they can shift that weight but that only comes after lots of practice and lighter progressive lifts.

Where do you girls bench anyway, at your gym?

I've never even tried benching because that area is so crowded with men at my gym, and they all oogle at you and it's so intimidating. Stop staring, dammit.

I do all my workouts at home; for the bench press, I now have a folding bench and two free-standing squat stands that work perfectly positioned either side and if required I can always asked hubby to spot me.

I don't do bench press as I prefer to do dumbbell press instead. I find I get a lot more out of it but anyway, that's not the question here. I'm up to 35lb dumbbells now, with 4 sets of 10 reps. I weigh around 116-117lbs at 5ft5-ish. I've no idea what my 1-rep max would be, maybe 70 or 75lbs but that's a total guess.

I started off doing 10lb dumbbells because my chest was very weak, no muscle at all, and then worked my way up over the course of about 6months of weekly chest workouts. One slight negative with the dumbbells over barbell is that (at least in my gym) you have to go up by at least 5lbs (i.e. 10lbs with 2 dumbbells) each time you need to go up which is quite a big step up for me every time, and I'd imagine other women especially when in the lower weights. I usually have to start by aiming to do 6-8 reps when I go up another 10lbs and I always have a spotter.

@Lancered - Regarding the intimidation/crowded weights area at the gym. Yeah, it sucks. I might get a workout top some time that says 'Stop staring, dammit'! Try not to be intimidated. A lot of the men hanging out there aren't very clued up on working out anyway! But if you have the option, get a male training partner. It definitely reduces the staring a lot.
