Sharp pain on standing or sitting, wouldn't be a bad idea to get it checked out to rule out the possibility of arthritis etc.

Is it still a problem now? I have not checked this thread in a while so I missed the posts.

I do not believe its from the shoulder shrugs. What are you doing for your back?
A home gym consisting of Bowflex Power-Pro XTL and power blocks(5-90). Also been working out consistently at a community center-JCC since November of 2014. Nice to have the home gym to fall back on off days.

Sorry for the delayed response....just got back from a series of business trips.

For my back I do the Tuesday portion of Doug's 4 day split building routine.

Wide arm pull-ups, then Close Hand Pull-downs, then One Arm Back Row, then finally the Standing Barbell Back Row.

I really have no pain in my back muscles, but its definitely in my lower spine. Since I have stopped the building workout, the pain has been gradually getting better (very slowly though).

Any thoughts? I would like to return to the building workout, but until then I am doing my normal maintenance workout (full body using only my own body wieght with light cardio).

By the way it just occured to me that I never posted my stats:

    5'10"
    172lbs
    BMI 23
    Bodyfat 14%

I am glad to catch idea from your article. It has information I have been searching for a long time. This looks absolutely perfect. All these tinny details are made with lot of background knowledge. I like it a lot.

    Keep on taking action!

nice workout! a good combination of stretching and strengthening! Pelvic bridging and assisted back extension is also helpful.

Thanks for the info. I have been struggling with finding ways to strengthen my lower back without causing more injury. I have multiple bulging discs in my lumbar spine and my range of motion is very limited but although some of these exercises are hard to get through they seem to help.

If I've been having some pain after doing squats and deadlifts, would doing these on my off-days from the gym help to strengthen my lower back, or would that not give my muscles enough time to rest?

I used to have lower back pain due to slipping 2 discs in my lumbar region, I found deadlifting helpded ease the pain and I did exercises to strengthen my core which also helped and now the pains have gone.

Good post. Basically I had some recent back injury after jogging on uneven ground. Felt left side of lumber. I think it was Facet Joint or Inter Spinal Process inflammation, as less pain on bending forward. Facet joints show more pain leaning backwards. MRI showed no disc problems. I think I had wear and tear over the years - Golf...bending with lots of torque in the back and poor posture.
I really helped myself but generally was same as these excercises you show, based on Pilates for core. I threw in some planks, side planks and press ups. NSAIDS to reduce inflammation, Hot and Cold packs on lumber. When this worked....lots of swimming. It reduces joint pressure on excercise and exerts the muscle only, by resistence.

Hello, I'm a beginner and sometimes have pain in my back. Do you think massage may help? What king of massage can you recommend? Do you think I shall reduce the intensity of my trainings? Please, reply to me who has any thoughts on that.

What part of spine is hurting you?

Try to post a picture with you to see the posture and back curvature.

And add some details about your age, weight, height, lifestyle and workout type.

The massage is not always a good solution for back pains and spine problems.

I am having lower back pain due to picking weights up off a friends back that was doing weighted push ups. I turned the wrong way and tweaked my back.

I am a daily weight lifter, go every day, and try to lift safe per my body weight (170lbs) give or take a few depending on the day. But I saw the very first post from 2006 that showed the exercises to do with lower back pain, so I plan on doing some of them because that makes complete sense. But wanted to reach out on anything else any1 has done while enduring back pains.

I enjoy doing back workouts, Deadlift, V-bar rows/pulls, etc. so I want to get back at it with them, without hurting my back. So I appreciate any input!!

I have also heard the massage and or specialists visit might do more harm than good. I am not saying its true because I have never had anything done, but just want to do the right approach but I will try all the exercises to help strengthen my back a little more. To help it recover.

The right kinds of lower back exercises will help recovery from back pain. These exercises are perfect for it.
