Default Neck Pain (Sharp Pain in Upper Vertabrae) HELP!!! Squats/Deadlifts

    Hello Everyone,

I have been lifting for around 6 months and I recently have been having random sharp/shooting pain that I feel in my vertebrae (in the middle of my neck). The pain is short lived and is typically felt when my neck is at a particular angle. I also would like to mention that lately I have been waking up with back pain.

My fear is that I may have injured myself. I have been doing squats and deadlifts which I am sure are notorious for causing spinal injuries but yet I feel like I could never give up either exercise. Deadlifts seem to aggravate the area the most. I have been trying to keep my back arched when required and I am big on form although I could be slipping on heavier lifts.

    Any help/advice would be appreciated.

    Thank You,
    Savas

I've had this happen once and there are two things to consider.
1: how high does the bar set on your back. A high squat could set on the nerve right in your neck. Or at least put tension on it.
2: are you keeping a neutral spine? Your natural curve of your back in the lumbar is important and so is keeping your neck "neutral". When I squat I look straight ahead but slightly down as if I'm looking 3ft tall object. And when I deadlift I look around the same. I try not to tense my neck either.

1: I tend to let the bar rest on my traps when squatting. Not sure if this is good or bad???
2: I keep a slight arch in my spine when squatting and deadlifting. When squatting I tend to look up toward the ceiling. I had a trainer that told me to do that when I was a teenager. It kinda stuck with me. I am not sure if that is the issue?

I will try modifying my neck position and where I rest the bar. I have taken 2 rest days to play it safe and I feel no pain at all. Leg day is tomorrow so we will see.

Record yourself and see if your lower back is truly arched. Instead of looking up, look straight ahead and push your neck back against the bar.

Today I did squats...I kept my head level and let the bar rest a little lower...no neck pain...thank you both...now let us hope that the same holds for deadllifts.

So I did deadlifts today and once I got home...I had the sharp pain...it felt as if my spinal cord was being pinched...very painful and short lived. I lifted lighter than normal to concentrate on form and was making sure to keep me back arched. I plan on having a friend video me tomorrow to get to the bottom of this.
