So I hurt my lower back a couple of months ago and haven't been able to squat because of it. In the interim, I have taken to doing step-back lunges with a barbell and going to a decent weight, but nothing crazy. I noticed that the lunges definitely tax your legs in a different way so I was wondering if there was any benefit to doing the step-back lunge over squats?

In terms of aesthetics, does it even matter?
