    It's simple.

You follow some basic higiena rules: wash you hands after workouts, usethe towel all the time and keep it clean or change it often, use an antibacterian liquid etc

Most gyms provide mats but even the cleanest gym may not clean them often enough, or at all. Studies have shown that gym mats are among the dirtiest areas of the gym–even showing traces of fecal matterand and bring your ouw mat wash the mat daily.
Frequent hand washing during your workout is the easiest way to stay healthy. At minimum, you should thoroughly wash your hands once you’re done exercising. Schelling recommends warm, soapy water with 30 seconds of scrubbing. For information you can visit this site

Can you provide the statsistics on how many people have contracted diseases from gym matts please, you've clearly done your research.

Dirt is fine, you can find fecal matter on everything, you know when you smell a fart? Yep, fecal matter in your nose. If you protect yourself from dirt to an excessive degree you'll never build up any immunity to disease.

    Fixed.

If you want to stay disease free in the gym, don't lick the treadmill, otherwise you'll be just fine.
