Default What advice would you give to your beginner self?

If you could go back, what advice would you give to the boobie lifter that you were?
Learn about the past to understand the context of the present. While at the same time, build yourself physically so you can take your body where your mind yearns to go. Training shouldn't be the limit of your self-development. It should enhance every aspect of your life. History builds empathy, and that's powerful. That, makes you better fit to perform.

Take those extra 45s off the barbell and learn how to squat properly. Would have saved me months of back spasms and aches if I would have done it right the first time.

This was a hard lesson for me for so many years. Finally humbled down and now I'm farther than I'd ever thought I'd be.

Probably stop being so greedy with goals. Less thinking, more lifting!

Oh yeah and be consistent! Had I not stopped, started, stopped, started when I first started lifting at the age of 40 I would have been so much further down the road than I am now at the age of almost 64! I only became really consistent in 2007 (age 54).

Perhaps not do a upper/lower 6 days a week for around 6-9 months last year...

Learnings - More isn't always better, I didn't atrophy to overtraining land, it just makes BAU life more challenging than it should be,my lifts were around the same, physique too.

Reason why I'm sharing this is because, I do an upper/lower atm -over 4 days now, and I feel so much better than before - stronger, I get to plan variations here and there much easier, and I recover much more easily.

More importantly - I'm excited to train!

100% focus on being consistent and just keeping at it. I struggled with motivation a lot when I first started.

If i could go back my advice would be to keep up my motivation and continue to go to the gym as regularly as i did when i started.
Also lower my ego, eat better and maintain myself better.

I would say, "Heather, trust the process. You might hit some plateaus, and become motivated. But don't give up. All the days you are not training, not running, not lifting, not eating clean, smoking cigarettes; you are slowly killing yourself mentally & physically."

Knuckle down and get on with it, there's no hard and fast rule here, you have to have consistency with whatever you do.
